It is vital that our Speech Language Pathology team at Hotel Dieu Shaver (HDS) have the tools they need to restore health, rebuild lives and renew hope for every patient that comes through the program. When the request for a new Visi-Pitch System – at a cost of $21,000 – came, HDS Foundation turned to a group who strives to make a difference in the communities in which they live – the Rotary Club of St. Catharines.
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Bob Bell, dedicated retiree of Hotel Dieu Shaver Foundation and supportive friend of our hospital.
Jack, who recovered from a stroke at Hotel Dieu Shaver in 2009, was so impressed by the compassion and care he received, started planning a fundraiser from his hospital bed.
“What HDS prepared me for was using my most powerful muscle in my whole body, and that is my mind,” she says. “I don’t think I would have been so brave and independent had I not had the HDS team telling me all the things I was capable of instead of focusing on what I couldn’t do.”
Gaetano doesn’t remember anything after falling asleep, or the eight weeks he spent in a coma in the hospital. As his coma progressed, his lungs collapsed and Gaetano’s right side became paralyzed. On a respirator and feeding tubes, doctors told the family on four different occasions that Gaetano would not recover. “The ICU doctor told my family that there was little hope,” Gaetano says. Her goal is to run in the Boston Marathon, eventually. “It doesn’t matter how long it takes, don’t let the dream go. I look at it like this recovery is my training for Boston.”
After having her life turned completely upside down because of Covid 19, Avi remains positive. “Everything has brought me to this experience. I plan to help as many people as possible.”
Chuck Page wanted to do something special to honour his 100th birthday. In 2020, he set a goal to walk 100 laps around his housing complex. Instead of gifts, he asked family and friends to donate to Hotel Dieu Shaver hospital.
